Well, that was close!
- It is done?
- ...no, it has only begun.
The launch of Al-Kimya: The Last Role was nothing if not difficult. This role-playing game has been in the making for over 11 years! Don't believe me? Look at the date on this post... January 2010, in the Alkimia: El Último Rol forum! (and the rest of the 1000 posts, of course; after all, the forum was dedicated to the would-be game)
When The Last RPG Game Jam was annunced, I (NimoStar) knew it was destiny. The time had finally come to finish Al-Kimya: The Last Role. So, with the help of Avengium, we set out to finish it before the end date of the jam, and thus, before 2020 ended in the entire world.
There was doubt, there was tears, and there was 50 pages of a small-font double-column illustrated manual. The task seemed impossible: How could something be finished in a month, when already 11 years had passed?
But fate is fate. Not only was the month long, dedicating my full attention in December to the project; but also, after staying all night (and all day) working during a whole week before the release, it was finally done.
Less than three minutes before The Last RPG game jam was over, the file finished uploading and alas, the game was ready to see the light of day in the new year 2021. It was only fitting that it was The Last RPG to enter the contest, but considering just a minute earlier it wasn't even finished uploading (and the previous one, it wasn't even ready), this was hardly deliberate.
So, now that we are free from the ticking clock of this new year, a lot is planned, but we can work at our leisure. There are bestiaries planned, underground expansions, futuristic settings, adventure modules (adapted from over a decade of adventures that preceded the release), and a re-edition with hand-made traditional pencil drawings by Jesús from Mexico... No, it won't take 11 years. Once the core was done, the rest flows like a river, pristine and musical.
It may have been the last day of the year, but it is the first day for Al-Kimya: The Last Role.
As a celebration, we are giving away the game, and a 40 mb art pack with nearly 100 high resolution images, on a donation-only basis. Though all celebrations end, and there will be discussions about the pricing scheme later, so by all means get seize the opportunity to grab it now.
Yet, by all means, if you would like to support development and are financially able to, do donate a few of your dollars in exchange for the work you are getting. It would mean a lot to us. And a lot to me particularly. And if you will, we can surely produce much more material (including finishing and releasing already half-done interactive computer games, which were not allowed in the Last RPG game jam), and even improve on the existing ones.
